When I was managing Rustflake they ran into trouble with life on the road – they were all clean living types, no S, D or R&R (well, a bit of the latter). They couldn’t hack it and disbanded (nothing to do with lost merch profits, which I maintain were nothing to do with me – just ask my accountant, those funds have proven totally untraceable). Metal/rock MUST have some hedonism to survive. Thoughts?

I usually see bands selling their own merch and having a companion band sell it while their on stage.  Many are sleeping in their vans or crashing at nearby fan houses who offer them shelter/shower for the night.  The downside is hearing that tip jars get stolen or vans broken into a lot.  The Metal scene while strong needs more financial support from their labels, but that does not matter to the traveling independent artist just looking to make a go.
