Tumblr Announces That “Tipping” Will Go Away On June 1st 2024

The Announcement:
We introduced Tipping back in February 2022 in response to your feedback, and it’s been a great addition to many communities on Tumblr. We do love to launch features that bring you joy, and Tipping was a part of that effort.

Unfortunately, Tipping hasn’t seen the usage we’d hoped for. So, in order to focus on the things that really make Tumblr Tumblr for most users, we’re shutting Tipping down on June 1.

Have you tipped someone in the past, or is Tipping enabled on your blog? You don’t need to do anything; the little Tipping icon will automatically disappear from blogs or posts with the feature enabled, and you’ll no longer be able to Tip creators or receive Tips. Any money you have received from Tipping will be paid out to the account you registered with via Stripe by June 15.

While this will affect a very small number of you, we know that those of you who do Tip do so with great admiration for your Tumblr peers, and we’re sorry to be taking this away from you. We hope you can find other ways to show your affection and gratitude for your fellow users: You could gift someone a badge you think they’ll love or Blaze the post you’d otherwise have Tipped, and that will surely make someone’s day.

Please contact Support if you have any questions about this change. Thank you, as always, for coming on this journey with us!

Ken Pierce Media Thoughts: So there you have it, another rather alarming announcement from the folks that are keeping Tumblr in play. Truth be told I think its now time to start reading between the lines and I reference the post that I shared HERE which lined out how Automattic was scaling back their efforts and the team members on the social media platform were moving to other projects. As they lined out back then, the platform didn’t meet their expectations and staff was going to be minimal on the network going forward. In January they decided to end “Tumblr Live”, an aspect of this platform that I never even bothered to use but when “Tipping” became an option I enabled it in the hopes that all of the work that is put into our creativity would generate some kind of stipend. Sadly, it didn’t raise a single penny for all the efforts that we put out there. If you made any money here, kudos to you but make sure its all in your account before June 1st. I’ve been using Tumblr as an extra thing for brand since March 2010 and would continually share the content from PiercingMetal, Piercing Ken and the KPM WordPress whenever there were sufficient sharing options on those blogs. They used to be unlimited but Jetpack has since throttled that angle but don’t get me started on that. As result the automatic shares to our Tumblr have slowed down considerably and there isn’t always time to do these manually based on the already overwhelming regimen. There is a part of me that feels that Tumblr is heading towards its own sunset and users should have an exit plan in place for good measure. IMHO neither Tumblr or something like Blogspot should be your main means of creating content unless you’re mostly a hobbyist/fanboy and not worried about a professional presence. This is a nice place to be able to share but there are more resonating options for you to use but I digress. The sky is not yet falling on Tumblr so if you use it keep on doing so. I will for as long as I can but I’d recommend that anyone who follows our content to subscribe to this blogs feed since its the best place to keep up with it all. Wrapping up I wonder what you think about this latest bit of news and if you managed to have any success with the Tipping via Tumblr. I’ll use this time to once again share the video I did when I imported all of our Tumblr stuff from a certain point into WordPress because there might be some of you who are considering doing a similar thing. Ciao for now, please stay safe out there.
