Categorically Speaking: Announcing Menu Changes for Piercing Ken’s Website

editorial label

Greetings my friends and welcome to another technical update. Every now and again you’ll find the Ken Pierce Media website doing this kind of broadcast as opposed to it being shared over on one or both of my other two websites. I’ll explain why shortly and will add that this particular notice is specifically geared towards any of you who are regular readers of my Piercing Ken website aka “The Chronicles of Piercing Ken”. I’m penning this announcement up a few short weeks after the 19th Anniversary of the PiercingMetal site (which is documented HERE for the interested) and since “The Chronicles” will reach its own 14th Anniversary in the coming weeks, I thought that it was a good idea to both make the change that I will be discussing and share it along with you in this fashion. Now onto the subject at hand. For many years, the Piercing Ken website has used a similar menu structure like the PiercingMetal website and has even mirrored two of its main categories with both the “Pop Culture” and “Reviews” sections matching down to the letter. Let’s discuss the Pop Culture section first. It used to look like the structure that you see down below with a Parent Category on the top and then the Child Categories down on the bottom. That’s the web-publishing vernacular in case you wondered.

POP CULTURE
– Comics
– Film and Television
– Toys and Collectibles

The change that was made finds the Parent Category of “POP CULTURE” being the sole category for those items with no additional levels to click and potentially explore. The rationale for this was based on there being less content in these sub-categories as opposed to what one finds over on PiercingMetal. By having every one of the original items that have been posted now falling under one feed the chance for Toy and Comics fans to see Film and Television stuff is better and it might keep them on the website a little longer which is never a bad thing at the end of the day. Though web-journalism is a numbers game when it comes to all of the Social Media Platforms, its a traffic building game for the website itself and the more that you read, comment on and like, the better it is for our standing in Google.

Next up, the REVIEWS Category and all of its Sub-Categories. What you see down below has been the model used for several years and since Piercing Ken isn’t as much of a review site as my PiercingMetal is, it was harder to populate five different categories with content. As you know, if a site visitor clicked the sub-category of Books, they would only see the books in a rundown on a new browser and the same applied for Events, Music, Products and Videos. With this being the end result I felt it was high time to offer up a change that made this section a little less cumbersome on the site visitor. I’d truly love to do more overall reviews here on the Piercing Ken site but its not always easy to do and believe me I have my creative hands full over on PiercingMetal. That doesn’t mean I view PK as a lesser site, its just delivered to the readers in a different fashion from its senior branding.

REVIEWS
– Books
– Events
– Music
– Products
– Videos

The changing of this section to be only REVIEWS would be a little more difficult than the POP CULTURE area I just spoke of. Sure its just a matter of deleting each sub-category because then the content gets placed under the main one but in WordPress, one should make sure that the posts also have the best tags in the post so the content can be easily found. Before I deleted BOOKS and EVENTS, I needed to make sure a number of additional tags where in those posts. At the time of this announcement, the sub-categories are gone but I am still doing some minor edits to those posts. At the end of the day I have to say that I prefer it like this since all the reviews can now be perused in a single view. Those labels became tags so essentially “book reviews”, “event reviews”, “music reviews” and so on. Having this change can also allow me the chance to expand upon the review principle in this brand. Since I don’t need to add any more categories to do that it might be something that I look into.

Wrapping it all up I will remind the readership that these changes are already in effect on Piercing Ken for you to peruse and see the new flow. Thanks for listening to this update on one of our creative angles, I will say that in addition to more regular posting being done on the Piercing Ken website, there is a whole lot of awesome content hitting our Official YouTube and Instagram platforms. You can easily keep up with the site via our Linktree by clicking HERE. See you next time.
